"If you kill it, you have to eat it" was the command my mom gave me at a very young age. She had to clarify things when I came through the door and said, "Cook it!" My first kill with my BB gun was a woodpecker. At an early age, I was in the woods with my dad looking for ginseng. The first animal that I harvested with my 410 shotgun, and my dad by my side was a grouse, which I thought was a chicken. I was fascinated with nature and I loved being outdoors. As I got older, the creeks, fields, and woods of my grandfather's east TN farm was my playground! I would catch snakes or bring home strange looking bugs to scare my mom. I'd spend hours playing in the creek or walking the farm with my dog and gun looking for animal signs. Those were the good ole days!
One day when I was in my preteens I frightened my mom when she seen me and my bicycle laying off in a field a few yards from the road. She was returning home from work and thought I had wrecked my bike. When she turned her car around to check on me, I said, "Shh, they're buzzards flying above me and I'm trying to catch one". No one told me I had to stink. I learned a lot from my dad and uncles about hunting and the outdoors. For example, who knew turtle and frog legs could taste so good! I try my best to share my passion of the outdoors with my son and others because there can be so much joy and beauty that can be taken in from it.
Since my inner tubing accident, being outdoors have taken on a whole different meaning. I enjoy watching the sun rise and the wildlife do their thing as a new day begins. I feel so close to God in those moments as I take in the sounds and colors of God's creation. It's during those moments that I tend to forget about being in a wheelchair. I love the challenge of hunting a wild animal knowing they can see, smell, and hear way better than humans. Anytime that I'm blessed to harvest such a beautiful creature is just the "topping on the cake". And, as my momma instructed me to do, I eat what I kill. There's not a better feeling of accomplishment than providing wild game meat for my family.
